Strangely Appealing
March 22nd 2009 19:46
It is strange what foods will appeal to one's palate. Take yesterday for instance. I was out for a drive in the country with a friend, looking for a house I'd seen for sale. Well we ended up in a small town, population 106, and found the original general store, now an antique store, with, of all things, fresh baked goodies. Bread, baked daily and homemade cookies. They also had pickle relish. Pickle relish is not uncommon in this area, but pickle relish is made from pickles, which are made from pickling cucumbers. This wasn't really pickle relish it was squash relish.
Squash relish, yellow, sweet and sour, a hint of red from something, probably pimento, and some onion. Now, I don't like yellow squash, to, well, squashy, and lacking in flavor. Yucky actually. But as I was given a sample, and I gingerly raised a small amount to my mouth, I got the aroma of some spice, not garlic, as one might expect, but maybe a hint of ginger? and a dash of pepper? Well, mouth starting to water, I tasted the squash relish, and boy was I surprised, it was good! Very good, I even borrowed four dollars, my purse was in the car, to buy a jar. It is still good today and chilled even better than yesterday. Wow, will wonders never cease, who'da thought? Squash relish.
I'll be going back, they had some homemade pickles made with jalapenos and other goodies that was also unique, it was a real pickle, made from cucumbers, but I have to ask, why did I choose the squash over the pickles, I love pickles and jalapenos. Hum, life is strange some days.
Check back in a couple of days as I join the debate on whether or not beer is food and should be a food group all its very own.

I have heard it advocated that chocolate should be a food group on its own, a discussion which I felt better left for others, but this is the first I have heard of beer being classified the same way.
Just for the record, beer is not a food group. Beer is a religion.

In college I wrote a paper about chocolate and its beneficial attributes and such. Frist time I my professor had ever had a paper touting the benefits of eating chocolate. Maybe I should have done it on beer.
What are your feelings on Scotch, the liquid?
