Sushi In East Texas

A miracle has come to East Texas. The larger of the towns that I live near now has two new Japanese restaurants. One moderately priced, the other not so much. Also, Jerry likes some Japanese food! Now there's a miracle!
Betsy told me about them, her favorite is named Osaka and is right downtown in the historic district of Longview, that's the town I live almost near, OK about about an hour away, but I go there regularly for shopping, and stuff.
Well, neither Jerry nor I are on an extensive budget, to say it's a tight budget might just be an understatement, we're broke basically, but we're both getting used to it. What we can't seem to get used to is not being to eat out as often as we want, or actually do, for that matter. We both love eating out and I love different foods, Chinese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Mexican, Thai, East Texan (oh, yes they do to have their very own foods), Steak Houses, you name it, I either like it or I'll try it if I haven't already.
So, back to Osaka, neither Jerry nor I had tried it, we were pretty sure it was out of our price range, especially for dinner, so Betsy gave me an early birthday present, bless her heart. A gift card to Osaka, this week, even though my birthday isn't this week or even this month, it was an early present.
Wednesday, Jerry and I had lunch at Osaka and it was fantastic! They even had Kirin beer, and green tea!
Jerry had Terriyaki Salmon with steamed rice and steamed vegetables, it came with a terriyaki sauce on the side and he loved it. It looked wonderful, smelled good, but I didn't taste it, you know that salmon thing I have, and the serving was large enough for him. The cost of this wonderful dish was around $8.95, if I remember correctly, which I can't promise.
Before our meal came we got a lovely fresh lettuce salad with a sweetish dressing that was very refreshing, it was very good. My only suggestion would that they use something besides Iceberg lettuce, it is not the best, nor the most flavorful lettuce, but that's my only suggestion.
On Betsy's suggestion I ordered a Spider Roll, without even knowing what was in it, I really do trust her. Then I got a menu that had a description of the different rolls they were offering. The spider roll had soft shelled crab, avocado, and other goodies, no I don't remember what, sorry. I love soft shelled crab, always have, probably always will, and I love avocado, didn't always, but will always in the future. Jerry likes neither, so having something different was a good choice on his part.
I was also thinking of having some tuna sashmi, but decided to wait until I'd had the spider roll, which turned out to be a really good decision since the spider roll was huge! Really massive, at least 10 pieces, and it had this lovely sauce on it, spicy but not too, with wasabi and soy sauce it was perfection. I brought almost half of it home, it made a lovely dinner too.
So, if you are ever in Longview, Texas, try Osaka, try the spider roll, or any of the others, Jerry and I've decided we can afford it occasionally, since we eat at other places with prices that are similar. Oh, just for your information, the spider roll was only $10.95, which when you consider that I had two meals out of it. I'll skip the beer since it pushed up the price and I love green tea, so...
I can hardly wait for the next time, I think I'll try something different. Jerry probably won't.

Raw Fish
I too am broke so now I make my own sushi and miso soup. I can't afford fresh tuna, expensive shellfish or fish roe (my favorite), but I make egg sushi, cucumber, avocado and other inexpensive fillings.
It is mainly the wasabi I like anyway.

Just Writing
I tried to make my own sushi once, and made a mess of it, but you've given me the courage to try again, using your suggestions. Thank you so much.
